Newman Architects has designed a variety of recreational sports facilities for
schools, colleges, and universities. Our experience includes gymnasia, pools,
field houses, tennis courts, athletic fields, squash and racquetball courts,
fitness centers, wrestling rooms and running tracks.
Most sports buildings require long span structures. We amplify the essentially athletic spirit of these structures, using light and shadow to create spaces expressive of the displays of physical skill they frame.
Sports facilities, like student centers, are gathering places. We design the linkages between activity spaces to support social interaction and the informal learning and exchange that occur when people meet by chance. We expose the activity taking place within the facilities with clear circulation paths and public gathering places at entrances. We locate windows where people can congregate, enabling them to see what is going on, and for athletes, whether competing or practicing, to draw energy from the presence of spectators.
