Throughout human history, the breaking of bread has been an opportunity for creating creating community and building human understanding. It is a time for exchange, for learning, and for those encounters that can change a life.
College students are self-conscious. The spaces we create for them to be together are specifically designed to help them overcome their anxiety and to help them make connections with their peers in settings that they perceive are safe. To be able to share a communal experience with other students, while at the same time retaining individual identity, allows a student to make choices, take risks and engage in the public realm without sacrifice of personal autonomy.
