City of Meriden : Meriden, CT
In conjunction with Amtrak’s expansion of service on the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail corridor, the station in Meriden will be substantially upgraded with facilities supporting its new role as a multi-modal transportation hub. The State and City view this development as a model “smart growth” project and a crucial catalyst to renewing the City’s downtown core.
Newman Architects, working with the Meriden Housing Authority and the Connecticut Department of Transportation, prepared a master plan to capitalize on development opportunities at a site on Colony Street adjacent to the new multi-modal center. The program brief proposes a mix of uses combining up to 100 units of housing with retail and professional office spaces and a parking structure supporting commuter, resident, and local shopping uses. A planning strategy using courtyards and liner buildings complements the low-rise downtown building fabric in a language that respects the 19th century legacy of historic buildings while reflecting 21st century design needs and imperatives.
This project is being designed for Energy Star Rating. This is the equivalent to LEED Silver Certification. Part of the sustainable design includes a geothermal heating and cooling system.
