City of Hartford : Hartford, CT
Pendulum/Newman Architects/SLAM Collaborative were selected by the City of Hartford, CT to design the proposed new Class AA Eastern League ballpark for the New Britain Rock Cats who intend to relocate to the proposed new Downtown North Hartford Development (DoNo) for the 2016 season.
Newman Architects was charged with the urban planning and exterior design of the ballpark. The location of the ballpark, at the northern edge of downtown Hartford serves as prominent destination for entertainment as well as a gateway to the development of a new neighborhood of housing, retail, and offices.
The exterior design takes its inspiration from the long history of manufacturing buildings throughout the region. The exposed steel structure and masonry and concrete towers help express Hartford’s industrial past. Openings at the ground level allow people a view into the ballpark and make for a more interesting walk down Main Street. Large scale graphics enliven the pedestrian experience at street level as well as vehicles travelling along I-84 and I-91 that a new and exciting venue and neighborhood have been created.
After several weeks of testimony and revisions to satisfy conditions of approval the commission unanimously voted in favor of granting a special use permit allowing the proposed stadium to proceed as designed at the intersection of Main and Trumbull.
