Yale University : New Haven, CT
The oldest of Yale’s residential colleges, Jonathan Edwards College (JE) was constructed in 1932 by James Gamble Rogers. Newman Architects’ renovation of JE renews this architectural treasure to nurture and inspire future generations of Yale students.
Our design added a 60 seat theater in the sub-basement-level, double-height volume of the former squash courts, gutting adjacent floors and cutting in two new four-story stairs for access and egress. Its performance space includes tiered seating, overhead lighting grid, and dance-quality resilient stage floor. The ‘theater district’ also includes Control Room, Green Room, Dressing Rooms, Bathrooms, Storage, and Electrical Room, plus ample wall space for the growing collection of JE Theater posters printed by the JE Press.
