Loomis Chaffee School : Windsor, CT
Located on the campus of a New England private secondary school, this project knits together a disparate group of existing gymnasia and a pool building into an integrated athletic center. Built in two phases, the principal new program elements include a multi-use double gymnasium (also used for all campus meetings), fitness center, squash courts, locker, team rooms, and trainers’ suite as well as administrative offices and classrooms. Renovations include converting an existing gym to wrestling and exercise areas as well as upgrading systems and finishes at the pool.
The existing main campus quadrangle is a wonderful composition of Neo-Georgian buildings with clear ties to the Jeffersonian academic village model. With an architectural language rooted in Georgian precedent, the New Athletic Center is contextually resonant of the best precedent on the campus, attaining a sense of weight appropriate to the need for a hierarchically ordered overall composition.
