The Peace Garden at St. Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, CT received a merit award from the American Society of Landscape Architects, Connecticut chapter.
In collaboration with landscape architect Langan, Newman designed a permanent home for four September 11th memorial “Bells of Remembrance". The bells represent four reasons to pray for peace — Sandy Hook victims, 9/11 victims, children suffering from poverty and hunger, and the military and first responders. The resulting Peace Garden reaches out to community, transitions from street to campus, and forms intimate spaces. Congregation and community enter to reflect individually, gathering periodically to remember together. It serves as outdoor classrooms to support the church’s school, and it acts as a community beacon when the bells ring.
