Keene State College : Keene, NH
These two new residence halls were designed for flexibility in order to enable the building interiors to be used in different ways as the ‘live-learn’ program of the College evolves. Both halls are suite style with between five to ten singles per suite. The suites are all singles, all doubles or a mix of both. The rooms of each suite open into a common area and have a suite-style bathroom.
One of the major design challenges was creating communities of common spaces on the main floors with clearly designated areas for dining, socializing, and studying. Kitchen and dining areas, lounges with televisions, meeting spaces, and small reading areas are grouped around elevators and staircases where students congregate. The spaces are clearly defined through the use of distinctive colors and materials, and furniture was selected to maximize flexibility of the floor functions.
The firm of Lavallee Brensinger Architects served as Architect of Record on this project.
