Founded in 1942, Fairfield Prep is a day school educating 800 male students, grades nine through twelve, in two historic buildings and a contemporary connector building on the Fairfield University campus. In pursuit of offering a Jesuit education that care for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit, and enhancing the school’s competitive advantage, Prep selected Newman to design a major addition to their buildings to house a new athletic facility and a 200-seat black box theater, as well as interior renovations to right size and upgrade their classrooms.
Following an intensive programming and engagement process, we arrived at an efficient program of spaces that expand and support Prep’s arts and athletics offerings with purpose-built, on-campus facilities.
The Barron Center for Arts and Athletics sits in the footprint of the former undersized gym, and, in weaving itself into the floor levels of the existing buildings, creates a new main entrance and clarified circulation through the campus.
