As Fairfield University has grown and student recreational preferences have changed, the university’s principal indoor recreational center required expansion and renovation. The existing facility housed a pool, locker rooms, four handball courts, offices, fitness/activity rooms, and four basketball courts in the Field House, an adjoining facility.
The redesigned recreational complex incorporates additions and alterations that provide 12,000 square feet of new fitness and activity space. On the main level, a new double-height lobby with grand communicating stair encourages contact among RecPlex users and offers as welcoming face fronting the University’s main entrance. The main level also includes a new core of staff offices and public restrooms.
The scope of renovation includes refitting the field house, locker rooms, racquet ball courts, and swimming pool, as well as energy efficient systems upgrades. An excavation at the lower level allowed for the addition of three new fitness rooms and support spaces adjacent to a racquetball court. New shower and locker rooms with gender equity provide private team locker rooms, general locker rooms, and semi-private locker zones.
The new upper-level fitness area overlooks the lobby below and full height glazing provides dramatic views out over campus. The fitness area connects to new elevated running track, an important new recreational asset, along the interior perimeter of the Field House.
