West Side Presbyterian Church Receives Religious Architecture/Restoration Award from Faith & Form And The IFRAA

Newman Architects is pleased to announce that the design of West Side Presbyterian Church has received a Religious Architecture/Restoration Award co-sponsored by Faith & Form Magazine and the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture (IFRAA), a Knowledge Community of the American Institute of Architects. The Awards program was founded in 1978 with the goal of honoring the best in architecture, liturgical design, and art for religious spaces. Fire had destroyed this much loved historic church located in Ridgewood, NJ. The client needed a new church complex that would address several program deficiencies in the previous building, including major disability access issues, poorly sited and inadequate parking, circuitous and limited pedestrian circulation.  Design challenges included stabilization of the remaining exterior stone walls, renovation and redesign of the existing church structure;  designing new additions to accommodate program needs; and incorporating minor modifications to the adjacent Christian Education building that prior to the fire had recently been renovated but required some interfacing with the design of the new church.  Beyond the functional planning, the architecture complements and honors the existing remains of the fire. The history of the church and Presbyterian ritual and liturgy have been included and honored in the new.  The light which filled the ruin and the sense of the sky and the neighborhood that were exposed by the fire led to our design approach of layering and filtering light into the sacred and secular spaces of the church.  The project also included an intense collaboration between organ builders and architects in the design and rebuilding of the Church organ.
